Educator GIS Workshops

In conjunction with the 2005 ESRI SouthWest Users Group Conference, the Utah Geographic Information Council is proud to sponsor the Second Annual Educators Geographic Information System (GIS) Workshops. The Workshops will be held Monday and Tuesday, September 26th and 27th, in Park City at the Park City Marriott Hotel. These one day GIS workshops are designed for Educators who are interested in learning about Geographic Information System technology or who are looking to expand their GIS knowledge and skills.

Monday's workshop will give educators an introduction to GIS technology. It is designed for educators who know little or nothing about GIS and are interested in finding out. In this workshop GIS professionals will introduce educators to the basic concepts of what a GIS is with an overview of how a GIS works. Educators will be given an introduction on how to use the GIS ArcView software, an overview of how Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology works and is used by in GIS, and how to collect data using a hand held GPS unit.

Tuesday's workshop is designed to expand your GIS knowledge. It is designed for educators who have an understanding of GIS and for those who have already been introduced to the GIS ArcView software. In this workshop GIS professionals will show educators how a GIS can be used for more than making maps through the demonstration of several examples of how a GIS can be used for analysis and planning. Educators will also be given more of an intermediate lesson on using the GIS ArcView software. Finally, educators will have the opportunity to attend two of the SWUG Conference breakout sessions to see how GIS professionals use GIS.

These workshops can be taken individually or combined into a two day workshop. Workshops are designed to be hands on and each is limited to 10 educators. Workshops will run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and includes lunch.

Cost:

  • Monday workshop is $20

  • Tuesday workshop is $25.

Please email Kevin Sato at ksato@murray.utah.gov or by phone (801) 201-2989 to reserve your spot in a workshop or if you have any questions. Additional Educator Workshop and Conference information can be found at www.swuggis.org
